Hazel Doreen Saunders

1934-2023

Hazel Doreen Saunders

It is with great sadness that her long-time caregiver, Nancy Leavitt of Back Bay NB announces the quiet passing of Hazel Doreen Saunders at the Passamaquoddy Lodge, St. Andrews NB on May 20, 2023. Born in Sydney NS on August 3, 1934, she was a daughter of the late George and Margaret (Bryson) Saunders.

Hazel moved to New Brunswick from Nova Scotia to work for Connors Brothers in Beaver Harbour in the late 60’s, where she met her long-time love and partner, Clayton. Hazel enjoyed playing Bingo and rarely missed a Toronto Blue Jays game or an episode of the Bold and the Beautiful. She was a devoted fan of both, even when the outcome was not at all to her liking.

Hazel is survived by her siblings: Carl, Fred and Beverly all of Nova Scotia, along with several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her best friend, Avis Vance.

In addition to her parents, George and Margaret, Hazel was predeceased by her siblings, Bobby, Earl, Roy, Billy, Ralph, Donnie "Flub", Shirley, Dorothy, Minnie, Francis and Evelyne. She was also predeceased by her lifelong partner, Clayton Leavitt and by a special nephew, Jerry Bruce Leavitt.

Many thanks go out to Extra Mural and Kindred Home Care for all the support and generous care given to Hazel in her last few years at home. She really looked forward to their visits and found great comfort knowing they were always close by. A special thank you to Lorna Anderson and Denise Goulding for their many hours of care, visits, and unending "treats". It was deeply appreciated.

To the staff of the Passamaquoddy Lodge, thank you for your kindness, compassion, and tender care of Hazel.

Arrangements in the care of the St. George Funeral Home (755-3533) 26 Portage Street, St. George NB. In keeping with Hazel’s wishes, she will be laid to rest with Clayton in the St. George Rural Cemetery. There will be no visiting or funeral service. In her memory, donations to the Alzheimer Society would be greatly appreciated by the family.
