Ellen Anita Hatt

1937-2023

Ellen Anita Hatt

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Ellen Anita (Campbell) Hatt which occurred at her daughter’s residence in Utopia on February 5, 2023. Born at St. George, New Brunswick, she was a daughter of the late Stephen Afton and Elsie Bernice (Clinch) Campbell. A loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, she is survived by her daughter: Laurie (Harry) Moses of Utopia; her granddaughters: Jill Hatt (Etienne Turcott) of Utopia, Stephany (Adam) Wright of St. George; great-grandchildren: Ethan Sinclair, Draya Langlais and Meadow Wright; brother: William Campbell of Breadalbane; sisters: Jane (Richard) Smith of Breadalbane and Stephanie (Alan) MacEachern of Digdeguash; special cousin: Rosslyn Allan (Dave Nutter) of L’etete; nephew and niece: Alan and Cheryl MacEachern; special friend: Richard "Dickie" Richardson of Deer Island and great friend: Eleanor Dougherty. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Sherman and son Stephen.

Prior to her retirement, Ellen worked for a short time in Beaver Harbour for Connor’s Brothers. She was a member of the Red Hatter’s for several years. She was a card and game player and especially enjoyed a good game of  Bridge, and two weeks ago recorded her highest score. Ellen also loved a friendly game of Scrabble. She loved the outdoors and was especially fond of berry picking as well as applying her green thumb around her home. In her early years, both her and Sherman were in the wreath business, as Sherman would bring the tips and Ellen would make the wreaths. Her cottage at Utopia was her happy place where she enjoyed spending lots of time there in the Summer. Ellen was a private person by nature but with a very giving heart. She showed acts of kindness to many, but she wanted to keep her anonymity. She was also an avid knitter and was known for knitting baby Afghans by the hundreds. Ellen will be missed by her family and all who knew her.

Arrangements in the care of the St. George Funeral Home (755-3533) 26 Portage Street, St. George NB. Although there will be no visitation, a memorial service will be held from the St. George Baptist Church on Friday at 2:00 pm with Rev. Jason Hooper officiating. In Ellen’s memory, donations to the Charlotte County Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
