Bertha Elzaid Mahoney
At the Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing, Saint John NB on January 19, 2012, Mrs. Bertha Elzaid Mahoney wife of the late Mr. Charles A. Mahoney formerly of Pennfield NB. Born at Basswood Ridge NB on March 4, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Addie (Bartlett) Smith. A loving mother, grandmother and sister, Bertha is survived by her son, Robert (Susan) Mahoney of Beaver Harbour NB, five grandchildren; Michael (Pam) Porter, Dustin Dwyer, William, Laura and Alyssa Mahoney, six great grandchildren, two brothers; Douglas Smith of St. Stephen NB and Paul Smith of Milltown NB, one sister, Eva Clark of St. Stephen NB, a sister in law, Helena Mahoney of New York and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, Charles, she was predeceased by a brother, Philip Smith and by two sisters; Amy Patterson and Bessie Barry.

Bertha served with the Canadian Navy for several years mostly in Ottawa. She retired from Fundy Linen in Saint John after being employed there for many years. She was an avid animal lover and she especially cherished her time with her companion Miss Kitty. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing Cribbage and 45’s and loved doing puzzles. She will be sadly missed by her family and all who knew her. Bertha was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 69, Saint John NB, the Hong Kong Veterans Association and a lifetime member of the Main Brace Naval Vets Association.

Resting at the St. George Funeral Home & Crematorium (755-3533), 26 Portage Street, St. George NB from where the service will be held from the Gary E. Waycott Memorial Chapel on Wednesday at 2:00 pm with Father Rolando Suplido officiating. The interment will take place at the Cedar Hill Field of Honor, Saint John NB in the spring. Visiting at the funeral home will take place on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Charlotte County Cancer Society or to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
