Harry "Douglas" Smith

1926-2024

Harry "Douglas" Smith

The passing of Harry "Douglas" Smith of Blacks Harbour NB and formerly of Fredericton and Tower Hill NB, occurred peacefully at the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen NB on January 22, 2024. Born in Tower Hill NB on November 8, 1926, he was the son of the late Harry and Irene (Sloan) Smith.

A loving partner, father, and friend, Doug is survived by his common law wife and best friend, Gladys Gaudett of Blacks Harbour NB; his daughter Patricia of St. Stephen NB, chosen children: Terri (Dan) of Fredericton NB, Kelly (Amy) of Edmonton AB and Tim (Annette) of Saint John NB, and an abundance of cherished family members including Ed (Tan), Brenda (Brian) and Bonnie (Mike). Doug’s recent reconnection with Gladys grew his family even more as her family welcomed him into their hearts and homes. Doug was predeceased by his wife, Louise Maynard and numerous special family members. All were blessed and better for having known and loved him.

Prior to retirement, Doug worked with the Province of NB in both the Natural Resources and Tourism sectors. An active member of his community, he was a past member of both the St. Stephen Rotary Club and the St. Stephen Curling Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, Golf and just having Gladys by his side. Doug had the ability to light up the room when he entered, and his never-ending sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Arrangements in the care of the St. George Funeral Home (506-755-3533) 26 Portage Street, St. George NB. As keeping with Doug’s wishes, there will be no visiting. A graveside service will be held at the Christ Church (Anglican) Cemetery, Pennfield NB in the spring. In his memory, donations to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
