Carolina Kooiman

1947-2019

Carolina Kooiman
Carolina Kooiman, age 72, passed away peacefully at her home in St. George, NB, surrounded by her family on October 7th, 2019.

Carolina was born in L’Aquila, Italy on February 4, 1947 to Giambattista and Flora (Fiori) Gianvincenzo. Having grown up in Italy, she graduated from La Sapienza University in Rome with a degree in architecture. On September 4, 1969, she married Gustaaf Kooiman, together had two sons and came to Canada as a family in 1980 after almost a decade in Africa. She loved the space of Canada, her woodlot and outdoor clothesline.

Carolina was known as a feisty and independent minded person with a big heart. She was passionate about the Italian language and culture, having taught Italian at St. Thomas University and UNBSJ. She also taught art courses and assisted many how to draw by hand. She had a lifelong interest in the visual arts and creating Roman style mosaics. She is remembered as a devoted and caring Nonna to her three grandchildren, Olivia, Maxim and Arria, who loved to spend summers with her in New Brunswick.

Carolina is survived by her husband, her sons Marco (Riviera Gjetaj) and Alexander (Sandra Mastrovito), brother Isidoro (Maria Carmelitano) and many family members in Italy and Netherlands.

Carolina was very thankful for all the care and support she received at the Regional Hospital in Saint John and from the angels at the Extra-Mural in St. George.
